Ocracoke Island, NC, to Jacksonville, NC

"Sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph"

Today's ride started with a 2:15 hour ferry ride to Cedar Island. The ferry left Ocracoke at 7:30 and the CrossRoads' staff organized breakfast for us on the boat. Once we landed on Cedar Island, Team Big Dog didn't waste any time moving on down the road. We had a favorable tailwind most of the day, but some of the time it was in our faces or from the side. Our route took us through marsh lands and by isolated homes. Many of the homes had stacks of debris stacked next to the highway: couches, refrigerators, carpet, dry wall, etc. ruined by Hurricane Irene. We then hit the coastal development in Morehead City before joining the busy highway to Jacksonville. Jack had a flat at the top of a huge bridge that spans the intracoastal waterway; we stopped to help him fix the flat before moving on. This was a double Dairy Queen day! There was one DQ adjacent to the SAG stop and I rushed in to get a chocolate milk shake before the group left. At mile 68, we stopped for lunch at a second DQ for lunch, where I had another milk shake and a cheeseburger.

  1. What's the story with you & DQ? Inquiring minds want to know.

  2. Dairy Queen milkshakes are the perfect recovery food - high in calories. Today's ride burned over 5,000 calories, so I can eat pretty much anything I like. In fact, it's important to maintain a high caloric intake to keep from bonking on a ride.

  3. Team Bitey Girl concurs wholeheartedly with your statements. It is a medical fact that one mile of riding burns well over a million calories (in dog math). Because we had over five hours of riding today, albeit by car, we made sure to keep well-fueled with the carbs.

  4. P.S. Today, one of the young chickens joined the circuit race. For awhile, that is. On an unrelated topic, anyone want to join us later for some chicken and dumplings?
